The 82nd Airborne Division was formed in 1917 and served with distinction in both World Wars. Because its members hailed from all 48 states, the 82nd Airborne earned the nickname "All-American," hence the double "A" design on the shoulder insignia for the division.
This photograph shows the shoulder insignia for the 82nd Airborne Division, as it appears on a jacket in the Minnesota Historical Society's collections. The jacket was worn by Sergeant Arnold Gustafson during World War II.
