Minnesota's Greatest Generation

Hubert H. Humphrey, Adlai Stevenson, and Orville Freeman, 1959

Jane Freeman became an active supporter of politician and friend Adlai Stevenson (1900-1965), who made two unsuccessful attempts at the presidency. Mr. Stevenson was elected Governor of Illinois in 1948, and was the Democratic candidate for President in 1952 and 1956, losing both elections to Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower. He was appointed the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations by President-elect John F. Kennedy in 1960, and served in that capacity until his death in 1965.
