Minnesota's Greatest Generation

Kitchen of William Howe Smith residence, Minneapolis, 1952

The stereotypical view of women in the post-war years brings to mind a woman in an apron whose time was largely spent in her kitchen, much like the woman in this 1952 photograph. Contrary to this image, many American women worked outside the home to help supplement the family's income, or dedicated themselves to extensive volunteer work, particularly after their children reached school age.
