Duluth native Betty Magnuson Olson served in the Women's Army Corps from March 1943 until November 1945. She received her basic training at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, and was assigned to the Port Inspector General's office at Hapton Roads Port of Embarkation in Newport News, VA.
After a transfer to the 29th Traffic Regulating Group, Betty was sent to France in September 1944, arriving in Paris just two weeks after Allied liberation of the city. She served as secretary to Major General Frank S. Ross, chief of transportation, European Theater of Operations, U.S. Army (ETOUSA), headquartered first in Paris and then (as of August, 1945) in Frankfurt, Germany.
