Minnesota's Greatest Generation

Sylvester Young, barber in shop owned by Walter Battle

African American businesses were gathering places within the community, and served as a network for assisting newcomers. When Matthew Little first arrived in Minneapolis from North Carolina and was looking for a place to live, he was directed to a barbershop for help.

This photograph, dating to the late 1940s, shows barber Sylvester Young cutting a customer's hair at Battle's Barber Shop at Sixth and Lyndale in Minneapolis.
