When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, they had hoped to debilitate U.S. aircraft carriers to prevent immediate reprisals. The carriers were not in the harbor on December 7, 1941 when the attack occurred, but the ships moored in Battleship Row off Ford Island were a major target, and many ships were sunk or damaged.
This photograph, taken by the Japanese, shows an aerial view of Battleship Row soon after the USS Arizona exploded.
