Dr. Willard L. Boyd was head of the Division of Veterinary Medicine in the College of Agriculture in the 1940s, before the Veterinary College was established. Dr. Boyd was one of several University administrators who showed reluctance to support the creation of the new college, but was appointed the first Director of the new school in 1947. He continued to serve in that capacity until his retirement at age 68 in 1952, when he assumed the role of President of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
