Writing letters was the most efficient and cost-effective way for family members and friends to stay in touch with servicemen and women during World War II, and letters were eagerly anticipated on both sides. Many a romance, like that of Royal and Doris Solie Bruchman, was carried on by mail and, in some cases, resulted in long and happy marriages.
