The Douglas C-47 Skytrain, adapted from the DC-3 commercial airliner, was used to tow gliders, and transport troops and supplies into combat zones during World War II. By the end of the war, 9,348 C-47s had been put into service by the Army Air Force. After the war, many of the planes continued to be used for supply missions, most notably the Berlin Airlift, which brought needed food and medicine to the war-devastated population of Berlin. C-47s were again called into service during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
