Minneapolis native Curtis L. Carlson (1905-1999) was perhaps Minnesota's best-known entrepreneur. Early in his career, while working for Proctor & Gamble, he began the Gold Bond trading stamp company, a successful venture that issued stamps to grocery shoppers that could be redeemed for cash. Mr. Carlson later invested in hotels, and established the Carlson Marketing Group (a marketing agency with clients around the world), Carlson Hospitality Group (hotels, resorts and restaurant holdings), and the Carlson Travel Group (a travel management company).
When Carl Platou sought capable board members for his Fairview Hospital expansion project in the 1950s, Curt Carlson was one of his first choices.
This photograph shows Curtis L. Carlson in his role as President and Chairman of the Board of Carlson Companies, Inc. in 1965.
