St. Paul's Como Zoo, which has atrracted visitors for more than 100 years, was established in Como Park in 1897 with the gift of three deer. in the 1930s, such improvements as the monkey island, main zoo building, and the bear grotto were built as Works Progress Administration projects.
The zoo was rescued from closing in the 1950s by a citizens' action group, and continues to flourish in the 21st century.
