Emily Day began her career as a social worker. She received her master's degree from Western Reserve University in Cleveland before coming to Minneapolis in 1942, where she took a job at the Elliot Park Neighborhood House. Emily took the initiative to start up a camping program for neighborhood residents at Camp Kitchi Kahniss on Lake Mille Lacs.
