St. Paul native Josephine (Jo) Downey joined the Women's Army Corps in 1944, and was sent to the South Pacific as a cryptographer. This photograph, from a scrapbook Ms. Downey gave to the Minnesota Historical Society, shows her in uniform. Portraits like this one were commonly taken for the benefit of family members back home.
