Migration to the suburbs following World War II prompted a building boom in housing, schools, and other amenities. Southdale shopping center in Edina was completed in 1956 by the Dayton brothers, who had set aside a 15-acre "medical zone" nearby. Carl Platou of Fairview Hospital saw a golden opportunity to bring medical care to the suburbs, and struck a deal to build a second hospital in Edina.
This photograph, taken in 1966, shows the Southdale medical zone with Fairview Southdale Hospital and medical clinic in the foreground, and Southdale shopping center behind them.
