Minnesota's Greatest Generation

Fragment of CCC fence post

John Buskowiak (1922-) described the hard labor involved in building fences in southern Minnesota with the CCCs. Fence posts were cut from the river bluffs above the Whitewater River and the bark peeled by hand.

Just 16 years old and wanting to record the moment, Buskowiak cut this cross section from a fir tree while working with the fence crew. Members of CCC Company 2709, Camp Plainview, generally worked from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., completing projects to reduce or prevent soil erosion in southeastern Minnesota's fertile farm country.
