Minnesota's Greatest Generation

Minneapolis looking northeast toward Foshay Tower, 1948

Wealthy businessman Wilbur Foshay built a skyscraper in 1929 that dominated the skyline of Minneapolis for decades. Known as the Foshay Tower, the 32-story building was designed by architect Léon Eugène Arnal in the style of the Washington Monument. Foshay lost his fortune in the stock market crash just weeks after the building's completion, and the tower went into receivership.

The Foshay Tower continued to provide office space until 2007, when work began to convert the building into a hotel. No longer the tallest building in Minneapolis, it remains an excellent example of Art Deco architecture.
