The first Americans landed in North Africa in November 1942, where they joined forces with the British in defeating the German "Afrika Korps."
Donald S. Frederick of Albert Lea, Minnesota, was among the men of the First Army Ranger Batallion in North Africa, who went on to fight in Sicily before landing in Italy. In this photograph he displays a Nazi flag captured in Sicily.
