Minnesota's Greatest Generation

Letter from Lt. James. J. Lavin to Mrs. Alta K. Frederick, 1944

For those waiting at home for news of a son, husband, brother, or father declared missing or known to be a Prisoner of War, any communication was welcome. This letter, written by Lt. James J. Lavin to Donald S. Frederick's mother reassured her that her son was alive and well, and offered practical instructions for obtaining more information about him.

To protect military secrets, Don's fellow soldiers were not permitted to send letters directly to him at the prison camp. Lt. Lavin asked Mrs. Frederick to forward a letter on to Don, using her return address to keep the company's location a secret.
