Before leaving the area, the 102nd Infantry Division erected a dual-language sign near the cemetery where the victims of the Gardelegen atrocity were laid to rest. The sign charged the residents of the town to care for the graves of those killed, and warned of the penalties for desecration of the cemetery. The "Gardegen Flaming Death House," where the POWs were killed, stands in the background.
