As the suburbs grew, the demand for city utilities also grew. Natural gas pipelines were laid to serve new housing developments, giving residents the option of purchasing either gas or electric appliances for their new homes.

This 1956 photograph shows a range of new stoves, refrigerators and water heaters on display at the Minneapolis Gas Company showroom in Southdale Center.
