Professors and students alike on college campuses across the country noticed the determination of veterans who enrolled to pursue an education after the war. Carl A. Kuhrmeyer remembered these "non-traditional" students as being older, and "pretty serious about school."

This photograph shows a group of veterans gathered around a piano in the student union at hte University of Minnesota in 1946.
