Hiroshima in ruins after the bombing on August 6, 1945.

The atomic bombs dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 wreaked unimaginable destruction and took thousands of lives. In spite of the role the bombs played in ending the world's greatest conflict, President Harry S. Truman's decision to use them remains controversial today.
