Minnesota's Greatest Generation

Irene Levin on emergency leave, July 30, 1944

Irene Levin's family was touched by tragedy twice during World War II when her two brothers, Lester and Harold were killed. Lester, a fighter pilot, was killed in action in France in 1942. Harold died when the bomber he was riding in exploded during a paratrooper training exercise. The Navy granted Irene an emergency furlough to return to Minneapolis for Harold's funeral in the summer of 1944, when this photograph was taken.
