For a serviceman overseas, a photograph of his wife or sweetheart was a cherished possession. When Dr. Reuben Berman received this portrait of his wife, Isabel, he wrote to her, "Yesterday your long awaited picture arrived. I was thrilled with it. I think it's the best picture you've had since our wedding pictures. It looked as though caring for 4 children all by yourself isn't causing you any worry lines. I'm going to mount it in some sort of frame. There is too much coal dust about to stand it up in the folder."
