Minnesota's Greatest Generation

Jeannine Breton with the quilt made by her mother

Saving scraps of fabric and creating useful things from them was just one way families were able to make the most of limited resources during the Great Depression. Mary Joy Breton carried that frugal creativity with her beyond the dark days of the 1930s. The quilt shown in this 1976 photograph shows Mary Joy's youngest daughter, Jeannine, sitting on the patchwork quilt made by her mother.
