Japanese-American translators were a key factor in the Allied victory over Japan. Young men trained at the Military Intelligence Service Language School at Fort Snelling helped to translate captured documents, assisted in interrogations of prisoners of war, and served as interpreters in the post-war occupation of Japan.
The soldiers in this photograph are diligently studying reference books and other materials to help them to become proficient in the Japanese language.
