Minnesota's Greatest Generation

US Army Nurse Corps Lt. Ernestine Koranda, Australia, 1943

Both men and women served their country in the Pacific Theater of Operations. This photograph shows US Army Nurse Corps Lieutenant Ernestine Koranda of Wadena, Minnesota administering a shot to Sergeant James Visaki of Burlington, New Jersey.

A 1930 graduate of Wadena High School and of the Ancker Hospital School of Nursing in St. Paul, Lt. Koranda was stationed on Papua, New Guinea during World War II. She became engaged to Bob Middleton, and was to be married over Christmas 1943, but while en route to Sydney, Australia her plane crashed, leaving no survivors. The Army named a hospital ship in her honor.
