Minnesota's Greatest Generation

Ferne Chambers, after becoming a Marine, 1943.

Ferne Chambers had worked at the De Ponti Aviation Company's glider factory for several months when her partner in making aileron tubes quit and was replaced by a man. Ferne trained her new co-worker into the job, but soon discovered that he was earning a higher wage for doing the same work she was. Taunted by the new co-worker and angry over the inequity of wages, she marched into the USMC recruiting office on her way home from work and became a Marine.
