Ferne Chambers Krans was working in a dime store when she was enticed by higher wages to apply for work at DePonti Aviation Company, Inc. at Wold-Chamberlain Field in Richfield. With a father who had been a carpenter, Ferne was no stranger to hand tools, and had no trouble getting a job helping to build WACO gliders. In spite of the good pay, Ferne left her job when she learned that a male co-worker was making more per hour than she was and, on his dare, joined the Marines. She is pictured here in her Marine Corps uniform, ca. 1943.
