During the 1930s, Minnesotans excelled in the amateur athletics of speed skating and figure skating. In 1934, twelve-year-old Dorothy Snell passed the first of the United States Figure Skating Association's proficiency tests. In all, she passed seven of the eight tests in St. Paul and competed in the Association's championships in 1936-40. Afterward she skated in traveling ice shows. These medals range from her 1934 proficiency test to her contestant's ribbon from the 1940 national competition.
