Minnesota's Greatest Generation

USS Mercy in San Pedro Bay, August 1944

The USS Mercy (AH-8) comfort-class hospital ship was converted from a cargo ship and commissioned August 7, 1944. The ship left California for the South Pacific on August 31st, and landed at Leyte, Philippines on October 25th, while the Battle for Leyte Gulf was still in progress. She made eight voyages between Leyte and Manus or Hollandia, carrying casulaties to base hospitals, until January 1945, when she was sent to Okinawa. The USS Mercy returned to California in May 1946, and was struck from the naval Vessel Register a few months later.
