Every G.I. was issued a standard mess kit that served as dinnerware. Also known as a "meat can," this U.S. Army mess kit consists of a cooking pan and plate that fit together as a unit. The aluminum pan has an iron folding handle. The plate is plated iron and is divided lengthwise into two compartments. The item was purchased from an Army Surplus store.
