Merchant shipping was vital to the war effort, both in Europe and in the Pacific Theaters of Operation. 250,000 men were needed to man 1,751 Liberty Ships. Recruiting posters like this one encouraged able-bodied men to consider the Merchant Marine in lieu of other branches of service.
