Minnesota's Greatest Generation

Children standing outside a theater

Americans flocked to the movies in record numbers during the 1930s as a means of escape from the harsh realities of the Great Depression. Children especially enjoyed the dime matinees – adventures, slapstick comedies and melodramas that featured such stars as Shirley Temple, W. C. Fields, and Spanky and Our Gang. If they were lucky, children might have an extra nickel to spend on candy!
