Edwin Nakasone was living on the Hawaiian island of Oahu at the time of the strike on Pearl Harbor. He enlisted when he came of age and was sent to the Military Intelligence Service Language School in Minneapolis, to learn the skills necessary to serve as an interpreter. Mr. Nakasone was part of the occupation army in post-war Japan.
