The Civilian Conservation Corps was represented as a golden opportunity for young men who had few employment options during the Great Depression. Ross A. Norton, who served in the CCCs first as a student, and later as an instructor with company 4707 at Outing (Cass County), Minnesota, kept a loose-leaf training notebook with notes and drawings on such topics as tree identification, use of explosives, a deer census, land surveying, and timber mapping.
