The necessity of custom-fitting the large quantity of B-24 bombers coming off the assembly line at Ford Motor Company in Detroit became a golden opportunity for Minnesota-based Northwest Airlines. The company opened its modification center at St. Paul's Holman Field in 1942 and during its three years in operation modified 3,286 planes for specific combat purposes.
This photograph shows Minnesota state legislators watching Patience Peterson at work at the modification center.
