Minnesota's Greatest Generation

Orville L. Freeman, 1950

Orville L. Freeman (1918-2003) was a bright star in Minnesota politics in the 1950s. After unsuccessful campaigns for Attorney General and Governor in 1950 and 1952, respectively, he prevailed in the 1954 gubanatorial race and went on to serve three consecutive terms as Minnesota's Governor. He gained national prominence when he was appointed by President-elect John F. Kennedy as Secretary of Agriculture in 1960, a post he held under both Kennedy and Johnson Administrations until 1968.
