When Carl and Harald Platou enlisted for military service during World War II, both men wanted to serve in the U.S. Navy. Harald was accepted, but Carl was rejected due to color-blindness, and ended up serving in the Army, instead.

Both of the Platous served in the Pacific Theater of Operations, and were briefly reunited when Harald's ship came into Hollandia, New Guinea and he was able to locate his brother in a station hospital there.
