When the Navy rejected Carl Platou and he was consigned to the Army during World War II, he volunteered for paratrooper training to avoid what he thought would be a boring military hitch in the infantry. In spite of a fractured leg sustained during a training jump, Mr. Platou finished the requirements to earn his airborne wings and was assigned to the 11th Airborne Division as a demolitions expert. He is pictured here wearing his uniform, which bears the 11th Airborne patch on the left shoulder.
