Carl Platou volunteered for service in the landing in Company H, 511th Parachute Regiment, 11th Airborne Division, as a demolitions expert. He served in the Pacific Theater from 1944 through the end of the war, returning home in December 1945. He is pictured here with members of his unit, with whom he had a bond "almost like a marriage. Total interdependence and trust and respect."
