Minnesota's Greatest Generation

Aerial view of Lake Cornelia and surrounding area, Edina, 1955

The rapid growth of the first-ring suburbs around Minneapolis and St. Paul can be clearly seen in this 1955 photograph of the Lake Cornelia area of Edina, looking west. The intersection at the lower right of the photo is France Avenue (running horizontally) and 66th Street. The open area at the bottom of the photograph is the construction site for Southdale shopping center.

Martha Doughty, a former resident of nearby St. Louis Park, recalled her husband working their bird dog and pony rides offered to children in an open field where Southdale is now located.
