Minnesota's Greatest Generation

Lee Sworsky and the Buchanan Street "Quonset Gang", 1947.

The post-war housing crisis meant that many families were forced to live in temporary housing until more single-family homes could be built. Surplus military Quonset huts helped to fill the need for shelter.

The Sworsky family lived in a Quonset hut on Buchanan Street in northeast Minneapolis for about two years. Lee remembered that each hut was occupied by two families and, as the babies came, space was at a premium.

Lee and her twin boys (seated behind stroller) posed with a group of neighbor women and children in front of some huts in this 1947 photograph.
