Minnesota's Greatest Generation

Ray Nagell in camp during military training, ca. 1942-1943

When Ray Nagell entered the military, he was sent to Fort Bragg, North Carolina for basic training. While there, he was assigned to the 101st Airborne, and was put into the extremely dangerous glider training program.

Ray remembered having no choice in the matter: ...they said, "Would you like to be attached to the Air Force?" And [we] said, "Oh, sure." So we were attached to the Air Force by a 300-foot rope that was pulling the glider. They didn’t ask me that, they just sent me down there. No choice at all.
