Dr. Reuben Berman shared his son David's love of dogs. While stationed in Northern Ireland, he adopted a stray dog, which he called "Rafni." His letters to his children featured stories about his new companion - including an account of Rafni's first flight in a bomber plane, and of the litter of puppies that were born in Dr. Berman's office. When her master was sent to France and Germany, Rafni accompanied him. The little dog disappeared while on a visit to Dachau Concentration Camp with Dr. Berman.
