The Fifth Ranger Infantry Battalion was activated in September 1943, and arrived in Europe the following January. They participated in the D-Day Invasion on the beaches of Normandy, and fought their way through Northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. In the spring of 1945, shortly before Germany surrendered, the Fifth Battalion took part in the liberation of the concentration camp at Buchenwald. The Battalion was inactivated in october 1945.
