Minnesota's Greatest Generation

Parking lot and Red Owl Grocery Store, Knollwood Shopping Center

Red Owl grocery stores were in business in the 1920s. By the 1950s, when the stores began to expand into the suburbs of Minneapolis and St. Paul, the chain was owned by the St. Louis Park-based Gamble-Skogmo Company.

Martha Doughty remembered shopping at a Red Owl store near her home in St. Louis Park. There were at least two Red Owl stores located in St. Louis Park. This photograph shows the exterior of the Knollwood Plaza store. Another store at Miracle Mile shopping center, was close to the Doughty family's home.
