The Japanese Admiral Isoruku Yamamoto, strategist behind the December 7, 1941 air strike on Pearl Harbor, was quoted after the attack as saying "All we have done is to waken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve."
The attack shocked and angered Americans, and such slogans as "Avenge December 7" became the battle cry as the U.S. entered the war.
