Salvaged stockings provided material to make nylon tow lines

Those on the home front contributed substantially to the war effort by conserving and salvaging materials, and through rationing. Nylon stockings were hard to come by during the war, and women were encouraged to donate their worn stockings for use in defense manufacturing.

This page from a booklet prepared about the First Troop Carrier Command based at Stout Field in Indianapolis shows one important use for used stockings: glider tow lines.
