Minnesota's Greatest Generation

The Samples family at a First Bank employees' picnic, ca. 1950s

Bob Samples wanted his family to enjoy the good life enjoyed by many white families. He landed a job as a clerk in the accounting department with the First National Bank of Minneapolis and moved his family to Richfield. As one of the first Black families to settle in the growing suburb, the Samples family faced many challenges, including the open resentment of their neighbors, in trying to fit in and live the American Dream.

Bob and Mary Jane Samples are pictured at a bank employees' picnic with (from left to right) baby Deborah, Christopher, Peggie, Bobby, and Frank.
